Extensor indicis proprius tendon transfer for extensor pollicis longus rupture

The extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon is one of the most frequently ruptured tendons. The EPL is the primary extensor of the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb and is also important in metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint extension. The loss of this tendon leads to an inability to extend the thumb and raise it to the level of the palm, leaving the patient with a useless thumb (1). Clinicall...

Rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon after Colles fracture.

During the period 1973-1986, 116 patients with rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon were operated upon. The lesions were categorised into three anatomical levels: proximal, intermediate and distal. Direct suture was performed for acute lesions; later reconstructive procedures were by means of tendon transfers or free tendon grafts.

Palmaris Longus Tendon Grafting for Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon Rupture bScrew Tip after 20 years

INTRODUCTION Spontaneous ruptures of extension pollicis longus tendon predominantly occur after undisplaced or minimally displaced distal radial fracture near Lister tubercle. Systemic inflammatory diseases and systemic or local steroid, mechanical causes like bony ridges, presence of bone plate or external fixator pin may precipitate this. Repetitive uses in certain occupation like cooking, co...

Extensor indicis proprius transfer for rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon.

We reviewed 21 patients with 22 ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus at a mean of 5.3 years after transfer of the extensor indicis proprius tendon. Of these, 19 with 21 transfers described the result as good, and two as fair. The mean deficit of extension between the operated and unoperated thumbs was 1.4 cm, and the mean flexion deficit 0.6 cm. Pressure gauge measurements showed that the s...
